Brazilian and U.S. Legislators Discuss Attacks on Democracy in Washington

Joint WBO/IVH statement
April 25, 2024

A delegation of Brazilian congressional representatives led by Senator Eliziane Gama (PSD) will hold a series of meetings with their counterparts in Washington DC, from April 29 to May 2.

The objective of the initiative, organized by the Vladimir Herzog Institute, is to exchange parliamentary practices in defense of democracy, based on the experiences of the congressional committees that investigated the anti-democratic attacks that occurred on January 6, 2021 in the United States and on January 8, 2023, in Brazil.

Among the activities on the agenda are conversations with Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin and members of the House January 6th Committee and a visit to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States.

The agenda has the support of the Washington Brazil Office (WBO) and has been coordinated with Raskin and Eliziane since November 2023, after a meeting between Vladimir Herzog Institute representatives and the legislators in Brasília regarding the agenda for the establishment of Democracy Day.
