Originally scheduled for late March, Lula was forced to postpone his visit to Brazil’s largest trade partner after being diagnosed with pneumonia. Lula has several goals in China. The first is to expand trade relations, further diversifying the portfolio of Brazilian exports, dominated by soy, beef, chicken, sugar, and iron ore. But there will also be discussions regarding deepening geopolitical ties between both countries. One of Lula’s first engagements in China was the inauguration ceremony of former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff as the new head of the New Development Bank, also known as the BRICS bank for the loose confederation of promising emerging economies — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — that rose to global prominence during Lula’s last stint in office. Lula wants a prominent role for BRICS in global affairs since it would raise Brazil’s profile as a player of international consequence.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;">Beijing also reportedly wants Brazil to officially join the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the massive global infrastructure program funded by the Chinese government. Unlike several Latin American nations that have welcomed investments from Beijing in recent years, a development that officials in Washington say comes at the expense of sovereignty in the long term, Brazil has long resisted joining the program. That could change with this trip. There have been mixed signals from within the Lula administration with special advisor — and former foreign minister — Celso Amorim suggesting that the benefits of signing onto the BRI outweigh the costs. Lula came to office with very ambitious plans in a whole host of areas. Money, however, is tight. If China buys more Brazilian products and invests in Brazilian infrastructure, for example, Lula’s government will be freed up to spend in other areas while benefitting from the economic advantages of a broader trade relationship. Reviving the Brazilian economy is key to Lula’s political success, and China is key to that process.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'Lucida Grande', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, sans-serif;">The war in Ukraine is also on the agenda. Since taking office, Lula has called for the creation of a group made up of countries completely uninvolved in the conflict who could negotiate a peace settlement to end the war. Several of the BRICS countries — Brazil, China, India — have been on his shortlist of proposed nations. Xi Jinping, of course, has recently called for the war to end in a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin. The war in Ukraine is an issue that Brazil and China, for their own reasons, both hope to help bring to an end.&nbsp;<br></p>

The hearings are part of the investigations into the failed attempt at a coup d'état, which took place on January 8, 2023. Among the soldiers heard were colonels, lieutenant colonels, lieutenants and sergeants who are part of the military units responsible for the security of the Praça dos Três Poderes (Plaza of the Three Powers) – the location in the capital of Brasilia, where the headquarters of the executive, legislative and judiciary branches are located. Moares is one of eleven federal supreme court judges The decision was made by him individually because he is the rapporteur of the case that deals with the anti-democratic acts carried out in recent years by followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro. On April 12, the Electoral Attorney General asked the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to declare Bolsonaro <a href="https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/poder/2023/04/procuradoria-eleitoral-defende-que-bolsonaro-seja-declarado-inelegivel.shtml" rel="nofollow" style="color:#aadc00 !important;"><span style="font-size:inherit;font-weight:inherit;line-height:inherit;margin:0;text-decoration:underline;">ineligible</span></a> to be a candidate in any future election. The request is based on false accusations that Bolsonaro made against the Brazilian electoral system to members of the foreign diplomatic corps in a July 2022 meeting held inside the Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence of the President of the Republic. At the time, Bolsonaro was seeking re-election against the now president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Members of the Prosecutor’s Office consider that Bolsonaro committed an abuse of power by using his prerogatives as president to spread false news against electronic voting machines and the electoral justice system. This lawsuit was originally filed by the Democratic Labor Party (PDT). Lewandowski took the post in 2006, nominated by President Lula. In 2016, he oversaw and supported the Congressional impeachment process against then-president Dilma Rousseff. Lewandowski leaves 245 pending lawsuits to his successor. The mostly widely circulated name in the press to replace him is Cristiano Zanin, who was Lula's lawyer in Car Wash (Lava Jato) investigation. Promoted content and ads that the user interacted with within the past 6 months must include information about the profiling criteria and procedures used in each case.
