Amazon, Environment and Climate Change

This program is dedicated to promoting actions that support the prevention, monitoring and fight against deforestation, in addition to the conservation and sustainable use of forests in the Brazilian Amazon biome. The importance of the regional climate and of preserving the sensitivity of forests and the water cycle, and the set of tools designed to advise decision-making for the future management of the region, including ways to monitor the functioning of the Amazon to avoid irreversible changes in its environmental services for the entire planet, includes:

Accompanying Brazil in strengthening its climate governance and in formulating, updating and implementing climate policies that allow them to have legislation and plans adapted to their realities.

Seeking to strengthen institutions, plans and policies related to the development and advancement of national and international climate change goals.

Fortifying the capacities of public administration personnel as well as other stakeholders, including civil society and, in particular, Indigenous peoples and traditional and riverine communities.

Reinforcing the integration of a gender perspective and the participation of vulnerable groups, Indigenous peoples, and local communities in environmental policies, action plans, and other measures.

Promoting actions for climate empowerment and strengthening climate change education, participation and awareness.

Strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related risks and natural disasters.

Improving education, increasing human and institutional awareness and capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact mitigation, and early warning.

Promoting mechanisms for building capacity for planning related to climate change and effective management in Brazil, including a focus on women, youth, local and marginalized communities

Integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and plans.

Promoting and protecting the social and cultural rights and the right to citizenship of Indigenous peoples, ensuring their specificities in public policies.

Guaranteeing to Indigenous Peoples and Quilombola Communities full ownership of their lands and promoting territorial and environmental management of Indigenous and Quilombola lands.

Preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples, their languages, cultures and collections, primarily those in vulnerable situations.
