LGBTQIA+ civil society organizations carried out a mission in Brasília on April 1st and 2nd, with the participation of Victor De Wolf (Rio de Janeiro), Maicon Chaves (Minas Gerais), Cleber Ferreira Silva (Paraíba) and Gleyson Silva de Oliveira (Pará) of the Brazilian Association of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transvestites, Transsexuals and Intersex People (ABGLT), an organization that is affiliated to the Brazil Office Alliance. The initiative combined moments of planning and internal coordination with institutional meetings, focusing on strengthening international advocacy.

“We are here at Itamaraty [the Ministry of Foreign Affairs] to discuss international relations, international priorities, how our country positions itself, how we can build multilateral relations, how it is possible to maintain democracy, multilateralism and the world the way we believe it should be, while advancing more and more in human rights,” said De Wolf in Brasília.

During the mission, the delegation participated in the inauguration of the new Minister of Human Rights, Janine Mello, and visited embassies, such as that of the Netherlands to expand a dialogue with diverse actors and consolidate alliances. Meetings were also held with representatives of the Brazilian State, including discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty), where Brazil's role in promoting human rights, democracy, and multilateralism on the international stage was reinforced.

The initiative allowed for the exchange of strategic information on international processes, such as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), as well as the presentation of demands from LGBTQIA+ civil society. The process contributed to the alignment of positions and the identification of concrete opportunities for action within the universal and inter-American human rights systems.

This collaboration reaffirms the importance of expanding the presence of Brazilian civil society in these spaces, strengthening its advocacy on priority issues and promoting progress in guaranteeing rights, in the face of growing challenges that demand more coordinated and consistent responses at the regional and global levels.
