 WBO Press Release
Sep 22 2025

A delegation of 15 Brazilian civil society organizations will travel to New York (September 22-26) and Washington (September 29-October 1) to participate in bilateral meetings, conferences, interviews, and briefings on the defense of democracy, human rights, the environment, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities in Brazil in the context of threats to the country's sovereignty. This is the first initiative of its kind since the inauguration of the new US administration.

The initiative is organized by the Washington Brazil Office (WBO) and has the support of Amazon Watch, Washington Office for Latin America (WOLA), Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), the Bem-Te-Vi Diversidade Association, and the Umbuzeiro Institute. The agenda includes meetings with U.S. civil society organizations—such as NGOs, foundations, and unions—as well as universities, think tanks, media outlets, funders, parliamentarians, social leaders, and activists.

Participants include the Brazil-US Chamber of Commerce, the Atlantic Council, Freedom House, rapporteurs of the Inter-American Human Rights System of the OAS, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, political advisory bodies and offices of the UN General Secretariat, Brazilian diplomatic representations at the UN and the OAS, Georgetown University, the AFL-CIO trade union federation, and congressional offices on Capitol Hill.

"This is the first delegation of civil society organizations to travel to the United States since the political tensions and the announcement of the additional tariffs imposed by the United States on Brazil in the context of the attempted coup trial and the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro," said James N. Green, Chairman of the WBO Board of Directors. "This year, government and business representatives have visited the United States to promote mediation and alliance-building, but this is the first mobilization by Brazilian civil society itself and between the civil societies of both countries since then."

"The strength of the international defense of Brazilian democracy depends on the hands of organized society," said Green. "We will help clarify and convey to international actors the civil society's perspective on Brazil's current key issues."

The 15 organizations that make up the delegation are:

• 4H5H Media

• Brazil Office Association

• Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB)

• Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, and Transgender People (ABGLT)

• Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB)

• Defend Democracy in Brazil (DDB)

• Decodifica Institute

• Futuro Institute

• Institute of Relational Policies

• Libera

• Cipó Platform

• Society, Population, and Nature Institute (ISPN)

• Cerrado Network

• USNDB

• Movement of People Affected by Dams

The role of the Brazil Office Alliance is to strengthen the international outreach of Brazilian civil society organizations abroad – in the United States, through the World Bank; and in Europe through the European Union (EBO).

The Brazil Office Alliance is an independent, nonpartisan think tank dedicated to promoting cooperation and knowledge about the Brazilian reality and offering support to the international work of civil society, social movements, and other sectors of Brazil abroad, in defense of democracy, human rights, the environment, indigenous peoples, and public freedoms.
