Open Call – WBO Research Fellows Program 2026

The Washington Brazil Office (WBO) is pleased to announce the 2026 annual cycle of its Research Fellows Program.
For this new cycle, the WBO is opening a selection process both for fellows who wish to renew their participation in the program and for new applicants interested in collaborating with the WBO in three priority areas:
Brazil–United States Relations
Brazil–Europe Relations
Internationalization and Environmental Defense of the Cerrado and the Caatinga
About the Program
The WBO Research Fellows Program is an unpaid, non-residential fellowshipdesigned for scholars, graduate students, and practitioners working on:
Democracy and human rights;
International relations and foreign policy;
Environmental justice, climate policy, and socio-environmental issues;
Public policy and international advocacy.
Selected fellows will:
Collaborate with the WBO in producing analysis, policy papers, briefs, articles, and public events connected to the three priority areas;
Participate in periodic meetings with the WBO team and other fellows;
Contribute to international debates on democracy, human rights, and environmental protection in Brazil, with a focus on the country’s relations with the United States and Europe and the defense of the Cerrado and the Caatinga.
The 2026 cycle will run approximately from March to December 2026 (final schedule to be shared with selected fellows).
Eligibility and Desired Profile
We encourage applications from:
Researchers, faculty, and graduate students (Master’s or PhD);
Professionals in think tanks, NGOs, or public policy fields;
Members of civil society organizations working on democracy, human rights, or environmental agendas.
Ideal candidates will have:
A track record of work or research in at least one of the three priority areas;
Interest in engaging with civil society, parliaments, international organizations, and media;
Availability to collaborate with WBO during 2026, producing a minimum set of outputs defined in a work plan (e.g. a policy paper, articles, public events, etc.);
Fluency in Portuguese and English.

Motivation letter (up to 500 words), explaining:
your academic and/or professional trajectory;
your connection to one or more of the priority areas;
why you wish to join the WBO Research Fellows Program in 2026;
Selected candidates will be notified by e-mail, and the final list of fellows will be announced via WBO communication channels.
